TOTO NEOREST Explained: RS vs AS vs LS vs NX vs WX, and Is It Worth It Over a WASHLET?

Home

If you have used a toilet in a Japanese luxury hotel, the lid lifted as you walked in, the seat was warm, and it flushed by itself when you left, there is a good chance it was a TOTO NEOREST. It is TOTO's top line of smart toilets, with the bidet built into the toilet rather than added as a seat. TOTO sells seven NEOREST toilets in the US. This guide sorts them using TOTO's own spec sheets, then answers the real question: what does NEOREST give you that a top WASHLET seat doesn't?

The lineup, sorted

The NEOREST lineup, sorted. Floor-standing one-piece models replace a regular toilet and use 1.0 or 0.8 gallons per flush: RS with a pearl white remote, AS with a stick-style remote, LS with metallic trim in silver, nickel, white or black, NX1 with a stick-style remote, and NX2, which is the NX1 plus ACTILIGHT. Wall-hung models hide the tank in the wall, use 1.2 or 0.8 gallons and are a remodel job: WX1 with height adjustable from 15 to 19 inches, and WX2, the WX1 plus ACTILIGHT. All models have auto flush, auto lid, EWATER+ for wand, bowl and under-seat, PREMIST, a warm-air dryer and 4-user memory.

The surprise when you read the spec sheets is how much the models share. Every NEOREST has auto flush (with a manual backup for power outages), a lid that opens and closes by itself, instant warm water, a warm-air dryer with five temperature settings, a deodorizer, a remote with memory for four users, a night light beneath the toilet and in the bowl, PREMIST, and EWATER+ that cleans the wand, the bowl and under the seat after every use. They are all Universal Height and ADA compliant. So the choice comes down to three things:

  • Floor or wall. RS, AS, LS, NX1 and NX2 stand on the floor and replace an ordinary toilet. WX1 and WX2 hang on the wall with the tank hidden inside it, which means opening the wall during a remodel.
  • Shape and finish. The floor models differ mostly in design, so look at them in person or on TOTO's site. The LS adds metallic trim and a matching remote in silver, nickel, white or black; the RS comes with a pearl white remote.
  • ACTILIGHT or not. The "2" models (NX2, WX2) add ACTILIGHT, described below.

What ACTILIGHT does

ACTILIGHT is a light built into the lid of the NX2 and WX2. According to TOTO, it shines on a bowl glaze containing titanium dioxide; under the light, the glaze breaks down organic grime and makes the surface easier to rinse clean, working alongside EWATER+ (TOTO). It is aimed at people who want the bowl to need even less scrubbing. We found no independent test of how much difference it makes, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason on its own.

NEOREST vs a WASHLET S7A seat

What NEOREST adds over a WASHLET S7A. Both have warm wash, heated seat, dryer, deodorizer and an auto open and close lid. Auto flush: S7A needs an optional kit on select TOTO toilets; NEOREST has it built in with manual backup. EWATER+: S7A cleans the wand and bowl; NEOREST adds under the seat. Look: the S7A sits on your toilet with the hose and cord showing; NEOREST is one sculpted, skirted unit. Flush: S7A uses your toilet's; NEOREST is electric and works from 7.25 PSI. Install: S7A is a DIY seat swap; NEOREST is a whole-toilet replacement.

The S7A is TOTO's top bidet seat, and it already gives you the auto lid, warm wash, heated seat, dryer and deodorizer. What NEOREST adds is the toilet itself: auto flush built in, a skirted one-piece body with no hose or cord in view, cleaning under the seat, and an electric flush that TOTO rates down to 7.25 PSI of water pressure, useful in homes with weak pressure. If you love the experience but not the price of a new toilet, the S7A on your current toilet gets you most of the way. If you are remodeling and want the hotel look, NEOREST is the one.

Before you buy a NEOREST

  • It replaces your toilet. Most people have a plumber install it. Check the rough-in (distance from the wall to the floor bolts) against the spec sheet before ordering; see TOTO Drake + WASHLET for how to measure.
  • It needs an outlet. NEOREST draws about 1,290 W (AC 120 V) according to TOTO's spec sheets, so plan a properly rated, GFCI-protected outlet beside it. Our installation guide covers the outlet rules for WASHLET seats, and they apply here too.
  • Wall-hung needs a remodel. WX models mount on an in-wall tank system in a 2x4 stud wall.
  • See it first if you can. NEOREST is a large purchase, and the floor models differ mostly in shape; TOTO's site lists showrooms.

Where to buy

When we checked in October 2026, most NEOREST listings on Amazon were sold by third-party sellers rather than Amazon itself, and the LS sold by Amazon was temporarily out of stock. Many buyers go through a TOTO showroom or plumbing supplier, which can also arrange installation. If you buy online, confirm the model number, the seller, and that the product is the US version covered by TOTO's US warranty.

Which one suits you?
