Where Are Brother Sewing Machines Made? Japan, Taiwan, China and Vietnam
"Is my Brother sewing machine made in Japan?" is one of the most searched questions about the brand. The short answer: Brother is a Japanese company headquartered in Nagoya, but its home sewing machines are made in Taiwan, China and Vietnam, and have been since Japanese production ended in 2005. Here is the full story, from Brother's own records, and what it means for you.

Where Brother home sewing machines are made
In a 2017 announcement celebrating 60 million home sewing machines, Brother listed its production history: home machine production began in Japan in 1932; Taiwan Brother Industries started making home sewing machines in 1979; Zhuhai Brother Industries in China started in 1993; and Brother Industries Saigon in Vietnam started in 2012. The same release states that home sewing machine production in Japan was terminated in 2005. Brother does not publish which US model comes from which factory, so the country printed on your machine's box and label is the reliable answer for a specific model.
What is still Japanese
The company itself is: Brother Industries is headquartered in Nagoya, where it started in 1908 as Yasui Sewing Machine Co., a repair business. Its corporate history, the brand, and the free Brother Museum (in Nagoya's Mizuho ward, open on weekdays with a reservation) are all there. Brother's top embroidery technology also shows up first in Japan: its flagship AVENEER EV1 embroidery machine went on sale there in 2025 at about 3.2 million yen, according to Japanese trade press.
Does it matter for quality?
Brother has run its own factories in Taiwan for more than 45 years and in China for more than 30, rather than relying on unrelated contractors, and it has made tens of millions of machines this way. For a buyer, the practical signs of quality are the warranty and support: Brother USA lists 25-year limited warranties on many models (with shorter terms for parts such as electronics and labor). Keep your receipt, buy from Amazon.com or an authorized dealer, and be wary of gray-market imports, which may not come with US support.
